Surgical removal of Appendix is termed as Appendicectomy. Appendix is a finger like organ located at the beginning of the large intestine on the right side of abdomen. Appendix has no role to play in human body. It requires removal when it becomes infected (also known as Appendicitis), inflamed or perforated. It should be removed as early as possible to prevent any complications. An incision is given on the lower right side of abdomen, appendix is visualized and removed. It still remains the standard procedure for this surgery and considered to be quicker and more cost effective than the laparoscopic route. It is done under spinal or general anaesthesia. In cases of perforation, a drain is temporarily left in the abdomen post surgery to collect drainage of pus, secretions, etc. It is a commonly done procedure and the patient is often a child.
